February 14, 2011

Lauren just had her one-year check up: she’s 30” tall (75-90th percentile) and she weighs 21lbs, 7oz (50-75th percentile). She is saying a few words: Mama, Uh Ohhhhh (her official 1st word), Dah (dog – also goes for cat, elephant, giraffe, all animals really). She says “Mama” a lot now, and “Up” when she wants to be held (especially when I’m busy making dinner). She does some ASL signs: dog (she loves dogs!), eat, more, milk (she does this for milk or water – sometimes when I give her milk she’ll shake her head No and sign “milk” and point to the water cup), more (this is the most common one she does), cheese, all done, kitty (she does this in conjunction with the “dog” sign – maybe “dog” means animal to her and she is just specifying what type of “dog” it is … “cat dog”).She probably says more and signs more that I’m forgetting right now, but she’s learning lots. She’s got 4 teeth on top and 4 on the bottom and loves, loves, loves to brush them – or chew on a tooth brush anyway. Peyton was the same way! He’d walk around all day with toothbrushes (even at other people’s houses). She’s up and walking everywhere and doesn’t have any trouble with the steps down to the living room. So far she just gets down and crawls up or down them. She seems to be growing up so fast. Her personality is starting to come out a little more now, and she does get upset when things are taken away from her. She really likes to climb up on things (again, a lot like Peyton at this age) and pull things around behind her. In fact right now she is pulling a fire truck behind her. She extended the ladder out and is using that as the pull-string.

Dylan Rae had her 5-year check up: she is 43” tall and weighs 40 lbs (both right on the 50th percentile line). She loves to dress herself. I used to feel obligated to tell people that she dressed herself on those particular days, but now I think it is obvious enough. She loves to wear dresses, but it’s been too cold for sundresses with no sleeves. So she wears pants and long sleeved shirts underneath. Generally they match in no way other than sparkles or some shade of pink. She wears socks under her “fancy shoes” (so they don’t sweat, she tells me) and she prefers socks with stripes or cartoon characters on them. She likes to play by herself with her little princess dolls (or whatever she finds and turns into princesses – could be rocks, even) and she loves to color and paint and any type of craft. She is a little mama – she loves to help Lauren do things or tries to soothe her if she gets upset (which isn’t often). In fact, Lauren is growing up too fast for her. Dylan tries to treat her like a baby, but she’s really not anymore.

Peyton had his 4-year check up: 42 ¾” tall (90-95th percentile) and weighs 40 lbs (75-90th percentile). He is a rowdy and rambunctious 4-year-old boy. He is very smart and is good at observing, then imitating to learn to do it on his own. He has learned what exactly gets under my skin too; so if I tell him he can or can’t do something he knows just what to do to make me happy or get upset. He gets bored easily with coloring (although he likes to do it for a few minutes) or watching movies (some more than others). Right now their favorite movie is one of the Herbie movies. They both think he’s so funny. They are watching Herbie Goes Bananas as I write this. The only thing he’ll do sitting still for any amount of time is playing video games – which he doesn’t get to do very often.

All in all we’re doing well and having fun. The “bigs” are loving preschool and Lauren is loving having some one-on-one time with Mom. In March we start some classes through Parks & Rec again. Lauren is doing Little Movers & Shakers and the “bigs” are doing Gymnastics. Earlier in the winter the “bigs” did soccer, but dreaded going by the end of the session. We’ll try that again later maybe. Neither of them is interested in T-Ball. They’re both excited about Gymnastics though.
